Grazing consultant brings expertise to Chariton in March

Ames, Iowa – Livestock graziers are invited to attend an Iowa State Extension meeting Wednesday, March 4, 2009 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pin Oak Lodge near Chariton for a presentation and discussion with Greg Judy, grazing consultant.

Greg Judy runs a grazing operation on 1400 acres of leased land made up of ten farms near Columbia, Missouri. Judy has given many presentations and conducted numerous grazing schools across the United States. Judy’s grazing systems have resulted in more wildlife, better soils, increased stocking rates, and eliminating costly inputs.

The discussion on March 4 will center on the mutual benefi ts of grazing and wildlife (quail) habitat; however, the topics discussed can apply to a variety of livestock grazing operations.

Topics will include the following:

  • Experiences in grazing leased lands
  • Building relationship with land owners and livestock graziers
  • Handling fencing and water issues
  • Liability issues for landowners and graziers
  • What to include in a workable pasture lease
  • What is Holistic High Density Grazing
  • What is MOB grazing

“Greg has written two books - No Risk Ranching, Custom Grazing On Leased Land in 2001 and Comeback Farms, Rejuvenating soils, Pastures and Profi ts in Livestock Grazing Management,” said Joe Sellers, Iowa State Extension livestock specialist. “Greg is a very creative and innovative manager that can help us look at new and different ways to graze cattle in Southern Iowa.”
