AMES, Iowa --The Leopold Center is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Spencer Award for Sustainable Agriculture, which honors Iowans committed to sustainable practices on family farms. Anyone who has made advancements toward ecologically and economically sound farming practices can apply, including farmers, researchers, educators and agricultural organizations.

The distinguished Spencer Award includes a $1,000 cash prize. Nominations must be received by July 15.

The Leopold Center has honored Iowans since the Spencer family established the prize in 2002. Past winners include dairy farmers, university professors, and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) leader. Individuals and organizations may nominate others or complete a self-nomination for the award.

The award serves as a memorial to Norman and Margaretha Spencer, who practiced innovative stewardship on their family farm for 40 years. They lived out their belief that each generation should leave the world better and healthier for the next generation.
