June 9, 2010Cherokee, Iowa-How do you renovate a pasture that has been continuously grazed for a long time? Find out how at PFI's "Improving a Perennial Pasture" field day on Thursday, June 24 at 3:00pm in Cherokee, Iowa. Field day hosts Nathan Anderson and father Randy Anderson will explain their pasture-renovation strategy.
Grazing expert Karl Dallefeld will provide recommendations for developing an improvement plan for the pasture. Discussion topics at this field day will include the history of the Anderson pasture, goals for the pasture and beef operation, and questions about what steps to take next.
Nathan Anderson is a beginning farmer raising corn and soybeans alongside his dad, Randy, and his uncle and grandfather. Nathan also grazes a small cow-calf herd. The Andersons are working to improve the forage quality and quantity of their pasture and remove brush in order to improve animal productivity. Putting their pasture to better use will allow them to increase their herd size, develop new marketing alternatives, and increasingly integrate livestock into their cropping system. As a beginning farmer, Nathan is hoping that the livestock will allow an improved path into the farming operation.
Nathan Anderson has farmed since 2005 and is a 2010 graduate of Iowa State University. Karl Dallefeld and his family raise and direct-market grass-finished beef from their farm near Worthington. He also manages Prairie Creek Seed, and has consulted on pastures and forages selection in the United States and Canada.
