The speaker, Frances Moore Lappé, is the author of 17 books including the three-million copy Diet for a Small Planet. Her forthcoming book, EcoMind argues that the way we look at today's environmental challenges robs us of power and prevents us from positive action. From global hunger to the environmental crisis, we have the resources we need to make a difference, but what Frances calls our “thought traps” hold us back.
She is the cofounder of three organizations, including Food First: The Institute for Food and Development Policy and, more recently, the Small Planet Institute, a collaborative network for research and popular education seeking to bring democracy to life. Frances and her daughter have also cofounded the Small Planet Fund, which channels resources to democratic social movements worldwide. The lecture will take place in the Great Hall of the ISU Memorial Union.
Lappé will also speak at the Iowa Environmental Council Annual Conference in Des Moines, which the Leopold Center is helping to co-sponsor through the Competitive Educational Support Program.
