Ames screening - Symphony of the Soil
Symphony of the Soil is a feature-length film that explores the complexity and mystery of soil. Filmed on four continents and sharing the voices of some of the world’s most knowledgeable soil scientists and farmers, the film looks at how soil is formed, its life cycle, human uses and misuses, and its role in addressing global issues. It will premiere this month at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum during one of the world’s largest environmental film festivals. Deborah Koons Garcia made her mark with a 2004 film about genetically modified food, The Future of Food, and runs her own production company, Lily Films.
Deborah Koons Garcia will participate in a panel discussion after the screening. Also offering comments will be Michael Thompson and Distinguished Professor Robert Horton (ISU Agronomy). The session will be moderated by Leopold Center Distinguished Fellow Fred Kirschenmann, who also apepars in the film.
The event is sponsored by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, World Affairs (funded by GSB), ISU Agronomy Department, Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture and the UNI Center for Energy and Environmental Education.
Garcia was a guest March 27 on Iowa Public Radio's Talk of Iowa. Listen to the archived program.
