The Franklin Avenue Library was recently awarded LEED Platinum status, which officially designates it as one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in Iowa. To celebrate, the library is sponsoring this event, which includes free red oak trees for the first 100 customers, and free seeded bookmarks, courtesy of the Des Moines Public Library Foundation.

The celebration will feature the unveiling of the new LEED Platinum plaque that will be displayed at the library. From 1:30-3:30 p.m., Iowa State University’s Insect Zoo will be in the Children’s Area. Kids will be able to view and interact with live insects and other arthropods while learning about bugs’ important role in life on Earth.

The library also will host a free screening of the Emmy Award-winning movie Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time. This documentary is about legendary environmentalist Aldo Leopold’s extraordinary career and how he influenced the modern environmental movement. Leopold Center Distinguished Fellow Fred Kirschenmann will introduce the film at 1:30 p.m.
