This event is hosted by Iowa Learning Farms and Practical Farmers of Iowa. It will focus on soil health,primarily no-till and strip-till as well as using cover crops. The event includes presentations and discussion with Clarion area strip-till farmer Tim Smith. He will share his experiences with strip-till, cover crops and how they work to help with the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy.
Also speaking, Sarah Carlson with Practical Farmers of Iowa will discuss prevented planting and cover crops. Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Paul Kassel will offer a crop update and discuss soil fertility. A question and answer session with a local farmer panel will be held. Anita Patrick, the MRBI coordinator in Buena Vista and Pocahontas Counties, will wrap up the session and share updates in the watershed.
The field day includes a complimentary evening meal served by the Buena Vista Cattlemen. The event is free and the public is invited to attend. Also helping to sponsor the event are the Buena Vista and Pocahontas Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
The Leopold Center is part of Iowa Learning Farms, a partnerships between the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Iowa Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (USEPA section 319); in cooperation with Conservation Districts of Iowa, the Iowa Farm Bureau and the Iowa Water Center.
