Researchers at Iowa State University and the USDA-National Laboratory for Agriculture and Environment are teaming up to offer a cover crop field day specifically for fruit and vegetable production systems. The field day will be held in conjunction with a crops field day at the research station.

The cover crop component is for commercial horticulture field extension specialists, county extension horticulturists, regional food systems working group members, local food organizations, members of the Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and Practical Farmers of Iowa, and personnel from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Natural Resources Conservation Service. Growers interested in learning about cover crops also are welcome.

The field day is co-sponsored by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.

Participants will learn about cover crop types, planting, management, benefits, and issues associated with cover cropping in fruit and vegetable cropping systems.

Registration is free but required for arranging food. Register by contacting research farm superintendent Bernie Havlovic,  bhavlovi@iastate.edu.

A SARE-Professional Development Grant will reuimburse mileage expenses for ISU employees, regional food working group members and state personnel. To apply for a travel scholarship, contact ISU Horticulture professor Ajay Nair, 515-294-7080, nairajay@iastate.edu.
