December 2 Workshop on Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Grants, 10 a.m.–1 p.m., 521 E. Locust, Suite 220, Des Moines. Hosted by the National Center for Appropriate Technology and the Leopold Center Farm Energy Working Group, this workshop is for small farmers and owners of rural, small businesses to learn more about funds available for rural and farm energy-related projects. December 4–5 9th Annual Iowa Organic Conference, Maple-Willow-Larch Seasons Cafe and Scheman Building, Ames. The event begins at 7 p.m. Friday in Seasons Cafe with a presentation by award-winning journalist and dietitian Melinda Hemmelgarn. Saturday activities move to the Scheman Building and include a keynote presentation by Leopold Center Director Jerry DeWitt, "Lessons from Farmers in the Field." Breakout sessions will focus on various topics from transitioning to organic, marketing, building carbon in the soil and government programs. January 5, 2010 High Tunnel Production Workshop, Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm, 6–9:30 p.m., Lewis. Workshops include two sessions. This is part one of the second workshop. Topics to be covered at the workshop include site and high tunnel selection, construction, soil management, irrigation, pest management, bed design and cropping systems and business plan development.
