What's coming up?
- Registration now open For our January 13 forum, "A Culture of Conservation: The Tools We Need to Grow," at the Gateway Conference Center in Ames. There is no cost to attend, but registrations must be received by January 7 to guarantee a meal ticket and to be entered in a drawing to receive a photography by Jerry DeWitt. - On-farm research Farmers interested in working with Iowa State faculty, staff or graduate students might want to check out the ISU-PFI On-Farm Research and Demonstration Grant Program. Deadline is December 16. More details [PDF]

Go for Goat Cheese, then Dig into the Annual Garlic Fest, Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) Field Day, 3–4:30 p.m., Northern Prairie Chevre, Woodward. Discussion at this field day will include cheesemaking, goat care and husbandry. As part of an ongoing strategic investment, the Leopold Center provides major support for PFI's on-farm demonstration and field day program. | November 11 | Fruit and Vegetable Working Group Meeting, 9:45 a.m.–3 p.m., Christy Hall, Story County Extension, 220 H Avenue, Nevada. The Value Chain Partnerships working group will have its quarterly meeting to discuss vegetable production, logistics and markets in Iowa. | November 12 | Mississippi River Water Quality: Policy, Farm Landscapes and Hypoxia, lecture by Eugene Turner, Louisiana State University, 8 p.m., Sun Room, ISU Memorial Union, Ames. This is the 2009 Dennis Keeney Distinguished Lecture named in honor of the first director of the Leopold Center. Turner is an oceanographer and wetland ecologist whose work addresses hypoxic zones, or Dead Zones, in which water oxygen levels no longer can support aquatic life.
