LEOPOLD CENTER REPORTS ON 21 COMPLETED PROJECTS

AMES, Iowa – The 2006 Center Progress Report now available from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University features summaries of 21 projects that were funded by the Center and finished their work in 2005 and 2006.

The Center provided support for research, education and demonstration projects calculated to help Iowa farmers at all levels with production and marketing issues. Among the project topics were:

  • Biological control of the soybean aphid,

  • How the Conservation Security Program is working,

  • Managed grazing and water quality,

  • Supporting direct meat marketing in Iowa,

  • Beef cattle feeding in deep-bedded hoop barns,

  • Tools to help grape growers and winery operators, and

  • Helping producers market processed foods.

Summaries of the projects are contained in an illustrated, 75-page paperback. The summaries are condensed from longer, more detailed final reports submitted by the principal investigators. Interim Center director Jerry DeWitt comments, “This year we have findings from all three of our research initiatives to share with Iowans. We are looking at practical ways that Iowans can raise and market their crops and livestock in more economical, environmentally sustainable ways.”

The Center’s research and demonstration efforts were carried out on Iowa farms, at ISU’s outlying research farms, and in urban and suburban areas of the state. The report was prepared by Center editor Mary Adams.

Funding for these completed competitive grants administered by the Center was provided by state of Iowa appropriations channeled through ISU and by the Agriculture Management Account, which is supported by fees charged on nitrogen fertilizers and pest control chemicals sold in Iowa.
