JULY 11 FIELD DAY TO FEATURE INNOVATIVE WORK IN GRAZING

CORNING, Iowa -- Three projects funded by the Ecology Initiative of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture in southern Iowa will be highlighted during a July 11 field day near Corning. The projects relate to innovative ways of managing marginal lands for grazing as well as wildlife habitat.

The field day will be at the CRP Research and Demonstration Farm in Adams County operated by the Southern Iowa Forage and Livestock Committee (SIFLC). The group was formed in 1990 to exhibit productive grazing techniques on marginal crop land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Some counties in southern Iowa will have more than 90 percent of their current CRP contracted lands expire within the next three years.

A pasture walk, to be held 4-5:30 p.m., will focus on wildlife nesting studies, the use of patch burns to manage grasslands, and options for CRP land coming out of contract. All three projects are supported by competitive grants from the Leopold Center Ecology Initiative.

An evening session from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will focus on grazing issues and several other projects underway at the demonstration farm, including a study to measure the water needs of cattle based on their lactation, health and weather conditions. A barbecue meal, prepared by the Adams County Cattlemen, will follow the evening program.

Other research projects at the demonstration farm are supported by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Southern Iowa Rural Water Association and ISU Extension.
