Cover Crop Mystery: Winter Rye and Corn

Winter rye cover crops can improve farmland health, but sometimes cause unexplained yield decreases in the following corn crop. Tom Kaspar, principal investigator of a Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture grant project, is conducting lab and field studies to test the hypothesis that winter rye hosts corn seedling pathogens, with the goal of identifying effective management strategies.
