A new generation of resources and tools for business planning, niche marketing and other farmer-led efforts were introduced at this workshop hosted by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. More than 150 people attended this day-long event, that featured presentations by leaders of 32 projects funded by the Center's Marketing and Food Systems Initiative and the Regional Food Systems Working Group (also coordinated by the Leopold Center).

Results and updates for funded projects were presented during concurrent sessions on:

  • Economic impacts of regional food enterprises,

  • Consumer research on sustainably-raised foods,

  • New business planning programs for food and fiber entrepreneurs,

  • Challenges and opportunities for natural and organic meat production,

  • Tools to assist Iowa farmers and farmer-led business networks, and

  • Place-based foods.
