HIGHLIGHT EVENTS OF THE LEOPOLD CENTER Ikerd on Iowa’s changing landscape
“I am stirred because the countryside between Missouri and Iowa is looking more like the old Soviet Union with fewer small farms and fewer rural communities. It doesn’t matter whether these very large farms are owned by a large corporation or a large cooperative, I suspect the consequences will be much the same.” -- John Ikerd, 2008 Shivvers Memorial Lecture, "Family Farms in an Era of Global Uncertainty"

Spencer Award for Sustainable Agriculture
I thought maybe this award might give me leverage to do what I really want to do and that is to be ‘queen of Iowa.’ When I’m queen there are two things I want to do: no cows will walk in any creek and no tillage equipment or planter will run parallel to any grassed waterway.” — Laura Krouse, in jovial remarks upon receiving the 2007 Spencer Award in January at the Practical Farmers of Iowa annual conference
Deadline for 2008 nominations is May 15.
