These are the terms used in the Iowa Produce Market Potential Calculator according to market function, measurements, and percentage adjustments.

Market Function

  • Demand – The total amount consumed (in farm weight)

  • Supply – The total amount produced (in farm weight)

  • Market Capacity – The percentage of the amount produced in each county relative to the amount consumed in each county

  • Market Surplus (Deficit) – The difference between the amount produced and the amount consumed (positive values indicate a surplus, negative values indicate a deficit)

Produce Measurements

  • Pounds – All values originate in pounds

  • Servings – Converts pounds to the number of servings based on recognized serving size specific to each product

  • Cubic Feet – Converts pounds to cubic feet based on weight/volume ratios specific to each product

  • Bushels – Converts pounds to bushels based on weight/volume ratios specific to each product

  • Hundredweight – Divides pounds into 100-pound units

  • 1-Ton Truck Loads – Divides pounds into 2,000-pound units to approximate the number of cargo loads by a heavy duty pick up truck

  • 10-Ton Truck Loads – Divides pounds into 20,000-pound units to approximate the number of cargo loads by a large store delivery truck

  • 20-Ton Truck Loads – Divides pounds into 40,000-pound units to approximate the number of cargo loads by a semi truck

  • Acres @ Iowa Yield – Converts pounds to number of acres needed to grow product based on Iowa average yield data specific to each product

  • Acres @ National Yield -- Converts pounds to number of acres needed to grow product based on national average yield data specific to each product

  • ($) Retail Value – Converts pounds to total retail value based on national average ratio of retail/farm price specific to each product

  • ($) Marketing Cost – Converts pounds to total marketing cost based on the difference between estimated retail price and national average farm price specific to each product

  • ($) Farm Revenue – Converts pounds to total farm revenue based on national average farm price specific to each product

Percentage Adjustments

  • Market Share – Allows users to adjust demand to reflect a specific market share

  • Iowa Yield – Allows users to adjust supply based on average yield per acre in Iowa for each product

  • Iowa Acreage – Allows users to adjust supply based on number of acres harvested and sold for each product
