Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Agriculture Program at Marshalltown Community College

Community colleges are uniquely positioned to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills, as well as to improve attitudes related to sustainable agriculture due to their practical, hands-on focus and local connections. In 2004, Marshalltown Community College (MCC), with the aid of a grant from the Leopold Center, established the Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Agriculture (SEA) program, which was the first associate degree program in sustainable agriculture in the Midwest. The SEA program serves both traditional (for credit) students and adult learners through coursework and workshops in various topics in sustainable agriculture and niche marketing. MCC is taking a novel approach using local farmers to teach practices in sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship.
