Development of a regional wine culture in Iowa
This project will research and create a geographically-based identity for grape and wine production in eastern Iowa. The project will work in cooperation with grape growers and wineries in eastern Iowa to create the first Approved Viticultural Area (AVA) in the state and to document the economic impacts of this designation.
The project will:
Provide information to grape grower organizations and wineries regarding the concept, criteria and benefits of a regional wine culture.
Research and document a distinct geographical area for grape and wine production and submit an application for an Approved Viticulture Area.
Establish a wine trail to market the unique characteristics of the defined region.
Complete a report on the economic benefits resulting from the creation of the regional wine culture.
The project will be completed under the direction of the Limestone Bluffs RC&D in partnership with the Mississippi Valley Grape Growers Association, the Sustainable Tourism and Environment Program at the University of Northern Iowa, Drake University Law School, the Iowa Department of Economic Development, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and others.
The project held an informational meeting regarding viticulture areas for grape growers and winemakers in eastern Iowa. A committee was established and draft boundaries for the AVA were identified. Currently data is being gathered for the application and the boundaries
identified. The Iowa Wine Trail has been established that currently involves six wineries. This group has established a website, developed a brochure, and held 3 cooperative marketing events.
