NEW DIRECTOR APPOINTED FOR LEOPOLD CENTER
A microbiologist with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been named the next director of the Leopold Center. Mark Rasmussen, supervisory microbiologist and director of the Division of Animal and Food Microbiology at the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine in Laurel, Maryland, will begin by June 1. His appointment follows a nationwide search.

DIRECTOR CANDIDATES VISIT AMES
Three finalists in the search for a permanent director at the Leopold Center are visiting the Iowa State campus in Ames. In addition to interviews, each candidate is presenting a public seminar about his vision for the future of the center and how his experiences contribute to the vision.

PRAIRIE CONSERVATION STRIPS
The Leopold Center has created a resource for landowners interested in a new type of conservation practice that’s showing a lot of promise. A Landowner’s Guide to Prairie Conservation Strips answers common questions about this system, the topic of Leopold Center-supported research at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Jasper County.

CHECK OUT THESE FIELD DAYS
We’re midway through the field day season and already 2011 will be remembered for the searing summer heat and high humidity. In spite of the weather, attendance has been good, with a lot of people learning about new systems and projects funded by the Leopold Center, from rainwater management for high tunnels to grazing cattle on public lands. Here are several other upcoming field days related to Leopold Center-supported research and demonstration projects:

Iowa State President Geoffroy has appointed a committee to conduct a nationwide search for the next director of the Leopold Center. On-campus interviews are expected to happen in November, with a new leader in place by January. Keep informed about the process on our website.

LOOKING FOR PASSIONATE IOWANS
The Leopold Center is looking for Iowans who have a long-standing commitment and passion for the preservation of Iowa’s family farms to consider for the 2011 Spencer Award for Sustainable Agriculture. The Center has honored nine distinguished Iowa farm families and educators since the Spencer family established the prize and $1,000 cash award in 2001. For details and a nomination form
