Cover of 2023 Leopold Center report AMES, Iowa -- The 2023 annual report from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, released this week, reviews an active year of Leopold-supported activities and research.

The four-page report highlights:

  • The well-attended 2023 Shivvers Lecture by Iowa State University alum Hannah Lewis on the international mini-forest movement to “re-wild the world” and fight climate change.
  • A study of farmers’ understanding of edge-of-field conservation practices;
  • Preliminary findings from a long-term modeling exploration on the impacts of modern corn hybrids;
  • Insights on the status of agricultural land conservation from the latest Iowa Farmland Ownership and Tenure Survey;
  • The Center’s support for work led by the Wallace Chairs for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State and the Graduate Program for Sustainable Agriculture; and
  • Iowa Learning Farms’ outreach to build a “Culture of Conservation” in Iowa.

The report also includes encouraging and not-so-encouraging views of Iowa’s agricultural landscape, a message from the Center’s Interim Director Stephen Dinsmore, and a financial report that shows the Center remains in good standing.

“Thank you to everyone who has recently supported the Leopold Center – private support allows us to continue the Center’s mission – to identify and support new ways to farm profitably while conserving natural resources and reducing negative environmental and social impacts,” Dinsmore said. “We are always interested in ways we can use our limited funding to benefit Iowa by supporting valuable outreach and research consistent with these goals.”
